The symbol for the Camino of St. James is a scallop shell. Almost everyone you meet along the way has one affixed to their backpack. I never thought of it as a symbol for quiet even though I, likemany others, walk in quiet contemplation. I think of the shell as a way of holding the richness of our experiences for there are so many along this pilgrimage route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certainly my water flask is necessary and its own kind of salvation on the seemingly endless days of walking. I have never really thought of apples as an immortal diet, but then they were instrumental in our fall from grace and the reason many of us walk for atonement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeiswhathappens.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/img_0035-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13039\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lifeiswhathappens.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/img_0035-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lifeiswhathappens.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/img_0035-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lifeiswhathappens.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/img_0035-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lifeiswhathappens.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/img_0035-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/lifeiswhathappens.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/img_0035.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pilgrim hat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t have a gown of glory but I do wear a black dress and think joyful thoughts when I can, as I support myself with walking poles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m surprised there is no mention of a hat. The pilgrims hat is iconic. Maybe a cowl attached to a cloak works just as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see I\u2019m still thinking about walking. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I have said before, I walk pilgrimages in Spain.
