\nI was a little surprised to hear that the song at the top of
\nthe pops in Britain or pretty close to the top anyway, was \u201cThe Wicked Witch is
\nDead.\u201d The song itself is from The Wizard of Oz, however, it \u2018s being played a
\nlot in Britain these day because of the death of Margaret Thatcher. It is also a
\ntestament to how much the country hated and still hates the Conservative Party’s platform of privatizing industry, diluting the strength of the unions and
\ngenerally moving Britain from a strongly socialist country to a more central
\nposition, politically.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThatcher had to put in some pretty tough legislation and
\nclearly she was hated for it.  She was obviously
\na person who didn\u2019t have to be loved. She created for herself the role of the
\n\u201cwicked witch\u201d and seemed to find opportunities to enact the character again
\nand again.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nI know in the theatre some actors can become synonymous with
\na role, so much so that they seem to become that character in their real life,
\noff stage. Perhaps, this is what happened to Margaret Thatcher. I always
\nremember when she brought in the \u201chead tax.\u201d It was never scaled to a citizen\u2019s
\nability to pay. If you were a pensioner on limited means, you paid the same as
\nsomeone of virtually unlimited means.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMy mother-in-law was in the former group and I remember the
\nfamily breathing a sigh of relief when the tax was abolished. This tax also
\nsignaled Thatcher\u2019s demise. It might have been the equivalent of the bucket of
\nwater thrown on the Wicked Witch in the classic play. Eventually leaders fail,
\nregimes collapse and society gravitates to a middle ground.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nI do like the song that Andrew Lloyd Webber added to his
\nproduction of the Wizard of Oz \u2013 \u201cHome is a Place in Your Heart\u201d \u2013 presumably with
\nout witches.<\/div>\n
