Biblically it means speaking in tongues &#8211; uttering incomprehensible syllables, usually as part of a religious experience. Although it has strong links with Christianity, it is also a practice used by shamans, the Oracle of Delphi and really bad actors \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>This got me thinking of all the idioms in English that refer to the tongue, when communicating. calling<br \/>\nsomeone by the wrong name, for example.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s often the fatal error in spy movies!!<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"id-term\" style=\"color: #333333;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-weight: bold;margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px;vertical-align: top;width: 150px\" valign=\"top\">on the tip of<i>&nbsp;your&nbsp;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>tongue<\/i><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 410px\">To say that a word or answer is&nbsp;<i>on the tip of your&nbsp;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>tongue,<\/i>&nbsp;means that you&#8217;re sure you know it but<br \/>\nhave difficulty finding it.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366;font-family: Calibri\"><i><br \/>A very graphic expression for a very irritating situation.<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366;font-family: Calibri\"><i><br \/><\/i><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"id-term\" style=\"color: #333333;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-weight: bold;margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px;vertical-align: top;width: 150px\" valign=\"top\">tongue in cheek<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 410px\">If you describe a remark as&nbsp;<i>&#8216;tongue in cheek<\/i>&#8216; you<br \/>\nmean that it is not meant to be taken seriously;<br \/>\nit is meant to be funny or ironic.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366;font-family: Calibri\"><i><br \/>I like the term but hate the gesture. It&#8217;s often better to change&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366;font-family: Calibri\"><i>the topic, as in &#8220;Oh what lovely Geraniums you have&#8221; &#8211; then&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366;font-family: Calibri\"><i>trying to un-knot the moment.<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366;font-family: Calibri\"><i><br \/><\/i><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"id-term\" style=\"color: #333333;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-weight: bold;margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px;vertical-align: top;width: 150px\" valign=\"top\">tongues are wagging<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 410px\">When<i>&nbsp;tongues are wagging,<\/i>&nbsp;people are beginning<br \/>\nto spread gossip or rumours, often about someone&#8217;s<br \/>\nprivate life.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366;font-family: Calibri\"><i><br \/>This always reminds me of a dog. Possibly an illusion to being two-faced or speaking out of both sides of your mouth. I always think of snakes, as in the snake-oil salesman.<\/p>\n<p><b>Speaking with a silver tongue<\/b> &#8211; Maybe not a snake-oil monger, but probably a politician. It means speaking eloquently so that people will follow you.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cat got your tongue<\/b> &#8211; obviously the opposite of the dog image &#8211; go figure. Remaining silent or refusing to speak, withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p><b>Find tongue<\/b> &#8211; finding a way to say something.<\/p>\n<p><b>Loosen one&#8217;s tongue<\/b> &#8211; &nbsp;take someone out for a drink to get some inside information. Get the person relaxed in an informal setting. It&#8217;s a deceit, but so many of these expressions are about being deceptive.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mother Tongue<\/b> &#8211; one of my favourites, though I envy those who can speak in many tongues!<\/p>\n<p>\nI think, though, that Ogden Nash said it best:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: white;font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 20px;text-align: left\">I hope my tongue in prune juice smothers,&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"background-color: white;font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 20px;text-align: left\">If I belittle dogs and mothers.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: 14px;line-height: 20px;text-align: left\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\nHave a great day<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Years ago I heard the term Glossolalia.
