Don&#8217;t get me wrong, I still love the ones who make me laugh, post inspirational thoughts for the day and remind me I have to avoid genetically modified food &#8211; good luck on that one. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/finley.kim?fref=ufi\">Kim Findlay&#8217;s<\/a> posts always suggest that I may have a mind! Kim posts about Art and Literature with a capital &#8220;L.&#8221; She follows blogs of an intellectual nature, and she reads e-journals such as the one she referenced today, The Paris Review.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/lifeiswhathappens.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/stelco-1.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"205\" src=\"http:\/\/lifeiswhathappens.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/stelco-1.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>What cultured conversation doesn&#8217;t start with the phrase, &#8220;I was reading in the Paris Review&#8230;..&#8221; Well, today&#8217;s article via Kim was a wonderful piece about the effectiveness of poetry &#8211; most specifically the poetry of W.B. Yeats and again most specially about the poem &#8220;The Second Coming.&#8221; I am immediately pulled back to a third year English class, I have never forgotten, because of this poem &#8211;<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: white;color: #333333;font-family: garamond-premier-pro, georgia, serif;font-size: 18px;line-height: 25px\">\nThe Second Coming<\/div>\n<blockquote style=\"background-color: white;color: #757474;font-family: garamond-premier-pro, georgia, serif;font-size: 18px;line-height: 25px\">\n<div style=\"line-height: 1.4em\">\nTurning and turning in the widening gyre<br \/>\nThe falcon cannot hear the falconer;<br \/>\nThings fall apart; the centre cannot hold;<br \/>\nMere anarchy is loosed upon the world,<br \/>\nThe blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere<br \/>\nThe ceremony of innocence is drowned;<br \/>\nThe best lack all conviction, while the worst<br \/>\nAre full of passionate intensity.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 1.4em\">\nSurely some revelation is at hand;<br \/>\nSurely the Second Coming is at hand.<br \/>\nThe Second Coming! Hardly are those words out<br \/>\nWhen a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi<br \/>\nTroubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;<br \/>\nA shape with lion body and the head of a man,<br \/>\nA gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,<br \/>\nIs moving its slow thighs, while all about it<br \/>\nWind shadows of the indignant desert birds.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 1.4em\">\nThe darkness drops again but now I know<br \/>\nThat twenty centuries of stony sleep<br \/>\nWere vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,<br \/>\nAnd what rough beast, its hour come round at last,<br \/>\nSlouches towards Bethlehem to be born?<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And here is the article from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2015\/04\/07\/no-slouch\/\">The Paris Review<\/a>&nbsp;on the popularity of the poem today, almost a hundred years after it was written in 1919. It&#8217;s a testament to the power of words and images, rhythm and rhyme or the lack thereof. Although, the poem did not have an impact on the dreadful events that followed its publication, it did and still does, give a voice to our anger, our frustration, our powerlessness.<\/p>\n<p>Although we may continue to &#8220;perne in a gyre&#8221; (Sailing to Byzantium), poetry can slow the spin, as we struggle to draw some meaning from it all.<\/p>\n<p>The title? from another of Yeats&#8217; poems &#8211; Easter 1916, which ends with the line &#8220;A terrible beauty is born.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The picture? Steelworks of the industrial age.
