Roses of the Apocalypse

Today the sky was the colour of ballpark mustard. I decided not to ask the score. I was a little concerned though and thought of calling a neighbour because maybe this is the apocalypse and I had somehow missed the notice. You know that generic letter from an unnamed source which starts:

Dear Resident of the Earth,

We regret to inform you that as of July 15, 2026 the Earth, as you know it, will no longer exist. We sincerely hope you have enjoyed your stay.

Eternally yours,

I think the world will end in fire rather than ice (Robert Frost), so I have added roses the colour of embers, as it could be a slow burn.

It’s an odd poem, but it captures the randomness of life, and of the cosmos. No doubt when the world does eventually end, it will be on some insignificant day – not a hallowe’en, a solstice or an ides, (today was the ides of July,) but a day without any meaning, to underline the futility of it all. I sigh as I live this poem, knowing that all my attempts to add some significance to my life are in vain. But I am a contrarian and I will rail against the powers that be, those who ignore the masses, believing our lives to be meaningless, even as they ignore the fact that we are the multitude giving meaning to their lives. Keep making life meaningful!!
