I Scream, You Scream…. – Life Is What Happens….

We all scream for ice cream – well maybe not these flavours. I know that I post a lot from Mental Floss – alas, I may have met my soulmate in a nerdy, mensa magazine – and my own IQ isn’t even up there with the biggies or the nerdies or something. Anyway, if they are that smart, how come they do posts on things such as 12 Strange Flavours of Ice Cream. I think that the key word here is “strange.” What is that saying about the fine line between genius and the insane. It’s maybe just a flavour away.

RAW HORSE FLESH

There are two dozen attractions within Tokyo’s indoor amusement park, Namja Town, but it would be easy to spend all of your time there pondering the many out-there flavors at Ice Cream City, where Raw Horse Flesh, Cow Tongue, Salt, Yakisoba, Octopus, and Squid are among the flavors waiting to tickle (or strangle) your taste buds.

HORSERADISH

Since opening Max & Mina’s in Queens, New York in 1998, brothers/owners Bruce and Mark Becker have created more than 5,000 one-of-a-kind ice cream flavors, many of them adapted from their grandfather’s original recipes. Daily flavor experimentations mean that the menu is ever-changing, but Horseradish, Garlic, Pizza, Corn on the Cob, Lox and Jalapeño have all made the lineup.

ESKIMO ICE CREAM

If you happen to find yourself in an ice cream shop in Juneau, remember this: Eskimo ice cream—also known as Akutag—is not the same thing as an Eskimo Pie, that chocolate covered ice cream bar you’ll find in just about any grocery store. Though the statewide delicacy has usually got enough fresh berries mixed in to satisfy one’s sweet tooth, its base is actually animal fat (reindeer, caribou, possibly even whale)

Here again I obviously lead a sheltered life. In fact I thought that I was really pushing the envelope when I made Cinnamon ice cream for my apple pie – meh!! or eating frozen coffee yogurt, with my latte after dinner – who am I kidding?

So now what do I do? I make a great curried shrimp filling for an avocado, maybe I could turn this into an ice cream. I did notice that no one mentioned hamburger ice cream, maybe that’s worth a try or maybe they have all tried that and failed. I like Roti and if they can have a Jamaican bobsled team, they maybe need some Roti ice cream. I also noticed that there wasn’t a fish & chip ice cream or even just an ice cream from French Fries…Poutine anyone? Now that we’ve drifted to French Canadian cuisine, how about some iced Tortiere.

Some how I can’t get excited about savoury ice creams. I know that people eat cold savoury soups and they are just a step away from ice cream, so yes I could do Gazpacho, Vichyssoise, or carrot and ginger ice creams…hmmm I beginning to warm or rather chill to the idea.
