Pilgrim

As I have said before, I walk pilgrimages in Spain. The symbol for the Camino of St. James is a scallop shell. Almost everyone you meet along the way has one affixed to their backpack. I never thought of it as a symbol for quiet even though I like, many others, walk in quiet contemplation. I think of the shell as a way of holding the richness of our experiences for there are so many along this pilgrimage route.

Certainly my water flask is necessary and its own kind of salvation on the seemingly endless days of walking. I have never really thought of apples as an immortal diet, but then they were instrumental in our fall from grace and the reason many of us walk for atonement.

Pilgrim hat

I don’t have a gown of glory but I do wear a black dress and think joyful thoughts when I can, as I support myself with walking poles.

I’m surprised there is no mention of a hat. The pilgrims hat is iconic. Maybe a cowl attached to a cloak works just as well.

You can see I’m still thinking about walking.
