AWE…..

Our word for today is awe – a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. I like the synonym “wonderment.” Too often we use words such as awesome, awful, overawed, without thinking. The feeling of awe is quite profound. I think it should be reserved for those fall on your knees moments of real […]

By one’s own hand…

Our word today is suicide….. I had posted earlier, that a friend had recently committed suicide. It’s a tragic act, a devastation for family and friends. The seminal work on suicide is still a book published in 1897 – Emile Durkheim’s, Suicide. Many years ago, in my third year of university, I wrote a paper

Pacify…

Our word today is pacify, to soothe. Although, pacify has a number of synonyms, soothe is the one I like the best. I immediately thought of the phrase, “to soothe the troubled mind.” In fact, I keyed this phrase into Google and came up with quite a list of suggestions to ease the troubled mind.

Essence…

Our word for today is “essence.” In very basic terms, it is what something really is. On one level, essence can be as simple as an essential oil – lavender is one I have used. One the other hand, essence can be as complex as the concept of democracy. As much as I say, I’m

That is: the doors that never closed were now tilting significantly towards their jambs and the doors that never stayed open, were

Canadian – eh?

Or maybe that’s ech! Nothing makes me feel more Canadian than a blizzard that starts about 3:00pm on a workday afternoon – just early enough to coat the roads with a slick of ice, before it’s time to even think of getting home. This is when a thirty minute commute turns into a three hour

Let’s Play Ball!!

I’m not what you would call a sport’s person. The only physical activity I do, apart from gardening, is biking. I don’t play, or even watch, tennis, golf, soccer, etc. and you would never catch me in a hockey arena. However, I do like baseball. To me it’s a sport, that’s more mental then physical.
