Grass…

Our writing word for today is “grass.” For me, nothing says Spring more than grass, at least, up here in Canada.  When white is all we see covering the ground from December to March, the sight of some green grass is a welcome change. The problem with grass is, there is often not enough where […]

Fête…

Our word for today is fête. It’s French for celebration. Posting about bread, or at least grain, yesterday, had me thinking about festivities. I equate festivities with food. Or, maybe, it’s food that makes things festive. Lunch, with a baguette from Jules, our French patisserie around the corner, and some cheese is always a celebration,

Razzle, dazzle, sis, boom, bah!!!

The word for our blog posts today is “dazzle.” So, of course I couldn’t just stop there. I had to go the whole nine yards, well, OK, five words – razzle, dazzle, sis, boom, bah! When in doubt look it up – “razzle dazzle” means 1 : a state of confusion or hilarity. 2 :

Asparagus as Theatre

One of my favourite poets is T.S. Eliot and one of my favourite books is Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. I love, love, love everyone one of the poems in the book and yes, I am a cat person!! Ironically, this weekend one of those magical poems came to mind. It was Gus –

Garden Porn…

I just received, with my papers – we still subscribe to both Toronto newspapers –  the Lee Valley flier. Now, most fliers come in the front door and go out the back!! I know I don’t need more clothes, or shoes, or furniture etc..etc.. However, I “brake” for gadgets. I don’t actually buy them, but

On the sex life of the Holly

Most gardeners know that Ilex or holly needs a partner – another holly tree or bush, to have them both produce those gorgeous red berries so popular in winter, when everything else is bland and grey. Several years ago, a horrific ice storm took one of our holly bushes, not to mention many limbs from

Sunny Sonoma…..

No trip to San Francisco is complete without a side trip to the wine valleys. Years ago we spent a week or so travelling through both the Sonoma and Napa valleys, staying at lovely inns, buying lunches from famous delis and picnicking in vineyards, with a bottle of wine. Decadence, thy name maybe, California. This

The only constant is ………

…..change. Our neighbourhood is changing. Developers are moving in and buying up single family homes, planning to build multiple dwellings on the property acquired. Sigh! There are a few of us, though, who do not want to “sell out.” Our lots are very deep. For some, it’s a chore looking after a long narrow lot.

Oh Grow-Op, My Grow-Op….

Every year for Christmas, my husband and I give each other bulbs to plant indoors, for the New Year. I always give Amaryllis bulbs, at least one, but sometimes two or three, depending on the price. My husband gives me Paperwhites and maybe an Amaryllis, as well. This year, I got both, plus six Hyacinthe

A Packet of Pictures….

I enjoy the words associated with groups of “things,” such as, “a gaggle of geese” or “a pride of lions” and I really enjoy making up terms to apply to groups of “things,” which maybe need a little more recognition.  These “collection” phrases are like miniature poems. They are shorter than Haikus, but they are
