Bleeding Heart

I was hoping the plant “Bleeding Heart” had a lovely folk tale associated with it. Sadly, it doesn’t. It should have, though, because it’s a gorgeous flower with a very romantic name. I plant the flowers that grew in my grandmother’s garden. Gardens have this ability to preserve so much of life. I think of […]

Winter Gardens…

When we first set out to plant our inner city garden about 30 years ago, we decided that we wanted a garden for all seasons. Planting for Spring to Fall was easy, given that we already had a full sized Sugar Maple growing there. A winter garden would take some thought, as the garden was

Day Lilies

If Day Lilies could speak, what stories they could tell. Maybe this is why their blooms last for just a day, secrets must be kept  – so sad. I have two beautiful patterns from two very talented designers using the day lily stitch.  Here is Day Lily Shawl from Judy Marples. and here is Lalique

A Love – Hate Relationship…..

I have a love-hate relationship with Lily of the Valley.  I know those seemingly innocuous flowers that have delicate sprays of tiny bells – and I am surprised that someone has not written a fairy tale about how those “bells” came to be – how could anyone not just love, love, love them?   Well

Lace in Nature…

We took a few days off from work over Easter and went for walks.  On Saturday we went to the Botanical gardens in Hamilton. A.K.A. The Royal Botanical Gardens.  The Cherry was in full bloom.  Here she is in all her majesty – no pun intended. I was also out collecting pictures for a new

A Splay of Tulips

I know it should be a display of tulips; but our Valentine’s gifts to each other and to family have managed to totally relax once freed from their bondage of wrapping paper, cellophane, elastic bands and anything else the florist could find to contain them before we got them!!! I love tulips.  The effectiveness of their

Backyard Lace

The challenge in the Globe and Mail camera club this week is to take pictures in your backyard and post them.  The idea being, I guess, is that the really good photographer can take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Here’s the link to some pretty interesting pictures of really nothing special, except that the photographer has

A Rose by any other name……

….would still bloom in December….maybe.  These were still blooming outside the Second Cup on Mt. Pleasant today – Dec 7, 2011. I am in awe, obviously, that we still have these precious flowers when we really should be burying their shrubs under a foot or two of snow. Maybe I should change my name to

Gilding the Holly

This is the time of year when we try to make everything “shine.” We put frosting on ornaments and lights in trees. We put up beautiful glass decorations to enhance and reflect light.  Perhaps it’s because the days are short, that we need to get as much light as we can, from wherever we can.

Holy Hollyhocks, Batman……

I hope that you can stand another scavenger hunt, because I’m in one again for December. This what I posted for “green.” It is very “ungreen” though, in an ecological sense, because it was taken on December 1, 2011 about 6 blocks south of the 44th parallel of latitude North. These are Hollyhocks blooming in
