The Mermaid within…

I have always loved the idea of a houseboat. To me it suggests a dream-like, almost fairytale existence. “Couldn’t we stay, for our three days in Amsterdam, in a houseboat, ” I asked? My husband, who is not nearly as romantic, noticed that the bedrooms were below deck – no windows, not even a porthole […]

Sixty Stairs…

Sixty stairs, I must be on holiday, let me explain. Last year, when we were in France, we booked 3 apartments through Home Away. All of the units were on upper floors in buildings without elevators.  I now consider climbing stairs as the yin to the vacation’s yang – or is it the other way

A Terrible Beauty…..

I have some friends on FB who always seem to elevate the situation. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the ones who make me laugh, post inspirational thoughts for the day and remind me I have to avoid genetically modified food – good luck on that one. However, Kim Findlay’s posts always suggest that

Poems for Thought…

At the risk of posting twice in close succession about poetry (I could lose the few readers I have), I feel that I have to give you (and me) a little more Mary Oliver. These are excerpts of simple poems that say so much.  From “The Journey” You strode deeper and deeperinto the world, determined to

You Do Not Have To Be Good…..

I have to thank Lee Ann Dalton for this poem. I follow Lee Ann on FB. She writes the column “Made in Canada” in Vogue Knitting and has written about a number of us, myself included. I haven’t been reading a lot of poetry lately, because I haven’t come across any new poets that I

Drapetomani….?

I saw this word on FB. It’s from the site Wordporn and it means – an overwhelming urge to run away. I didn’t identify with it immediately. It wasn’t really onomatopoe-ic enough – in other words, it didn’t sound like what it meant. Escape words need to roll off the tongue. They need to run

February Freeze

This post is a little out of sync, but then hasn’t everything been lately!! Extreme cold must dull the brain. The temperature has been plunging regularly to the -20s ºC from the mid – 10s ºC this February, making it the coldest February on record. Hence, I have had “brain-freeze.” Things need to lighten up

Say “No” to the Dress

I just had to comment on the insane re-posting and “discussions,” if they can be called that, of a particular dress, more or specifically, the colours of a particular dress on FB. “Maybe it’s the time of year or maybe it’s the time of man,” but every once in a while a totally meaningless item,

Type B vs Type A personalities

I am obviously a type B personality who has accidently subscribed to a few Type A blogs. Every once in a while I read a post that is so foreign to my world and my way of thinking that I have to share my comments on it – just to put things into perspective. Here

Sign sign, everywhere a sign!

Winter seems to bring out the signs. You know, the ones that say, “Wet floor, be careful.” It’s wet, no doubt, from all the slushy boots that melt, as people stand in line for coffee or something dryer 🙂 Or the signs, that say, “Use at your own risk,” for all those stairs that are
